Nutritive Food Distribution Programme

Supporting Malnourished Children and Vulnerable Mothers in Lumbini Province, Nepal

The Sewa Foundation Nepal (SFN), a civil society organization working in Karnali and Lumbini Provinces, successfully implemented the “Nutritive Food Distribution Programme” in collaboration with Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City and with financial support from the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to India, concurrently accredited to Nepal. The programme was designed to address child malnutrition and improve maternal and child nutrition in vulnerable communities of Dang District, Lumbini Province.

Lumbini Province continues to face serious nutritional challenges, including high rates of child stunting, wasting, and maternal anemia. In response, SFN launched a targeted intervention focusing on children aged 6 months to 2 years, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers in selected wards of Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City. The programme aimed to improve awareness on nutrition and hygiene and strengthen coordination with local health institutions and Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs).

The initiative was implemented in close coordination with local government authorities and health posts after receiving formal approval from Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City. Community-based screening identified children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM). Awareness sessions were conducted for mothers and caregivers on breastfeeding, hygiene practices, balanced diets, and child feeding techniques.

Between January and March 2025, nutritive food packages were distributed through five health facilities in Tulsipur, including Fulbari, Tarigaun, Urahari, Hari Paura, Kothari, Duruwa, and Kachila health centers. A total of 153 malnourished children directly benefited from the program during the last financial year. In the current financial year (2026/2027 AD), an additional 200 children are expected to benefit from this initiative. Overall, over 360 children will have received support from this program.

The programme contributed significantly to improving the nutritional status and health conditions of vulnerable children while enhancing community awareness on maternal and child nutrition. Continuous monitoring was carried out jointly by SFN, local health authorities, and representatives from the Azerbaijan Embassy to ensure transparency and accountability.

Through this initiative, Sewa Foundation Nepal reaffirmed its commitment to supporting disadvantaged communities and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to health, nutrition, and poverty reduction. SFN remains committed to expanding similar nutrition support programmes in remote and underserved communities across Nepal through collaboration with government agencies, development partners, and international donors.
